"The Accidental Death of an Anarchist" is the representative work of Dario Fo, an Italian playwright and winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature. In 1969, an explosion occurred at the Milan train station. An anarchist was accused of being the murderer. During the interrogation, he suddenly jumped to his death. Dario Fo responded quickly to the incident and wrote this play after a detailed investigation. A "madman" suffering from actor's mania accidentally came into contact with the materials of the "accidental death" of an anarchist at the police station. He responded improvisationally and disguised himself as a representative of the Supreme Court to review the case, and finally got to the bottom of the matter. The so-called "accidental death" turned out to be the police tortured the anarchist to extract a confession, beat him to death and then threw him out of the window, creating the illusion of suicide out of fear of crime. The play caused a sensation in Italy. In two seasons, it was performed 300 times in a row, with more than 300,000 viewers. In China, the drama of the same name directed by Meng Jinghui caused a strong response and became a classic domestic play.
"What is the real reason for the huge success of the performance? At least, it comes from the hypocritical lies of the authorities who distort right and wrong and fabricate facts, especially from their wanton trampling on the state system. We are clearly aware that our desperate actions may be reported, accused, and prosecuted. But in any case, our actions are worth it. As Bertolt Brecht said: "In dark times, we expose darkness, and good times will come." - Dario Fo
