About the Author

Fei Xiaotong (1910-2005), a sociologist from Wujiang, Jiangsu Province, entered Suzhou Zhenhua Girls' School in 1920. In 1928, he studied in the medical preparatory department of Soochow University. In 1930, he was admitted to the Department of Sociology of Yenching University. In 1933, he became a graduate student in the Department of Sociology and the Department of Anthropology of Tsinghua University. In 1936, he was awarded a government scholarship to study anthropology at the London School of Political Science. In 1938, he received a doctorate in philosophy (social anthropology).

After returning to China, he worked as a professor at Yunnan University and Tsinghua University. He joined the China Democratic League in 1942. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as a member of the Third and Fourth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a member of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Deputy Director of the Central Committee of Nationalities Affairs, Professor and Vice President of the Central University for Nationalities, Deputy Director of the State Council Expert Bureau, Vice Chairman of the Sixth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Seventh and Eighth National People's Congress, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League, Director of the Institute of Sociology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, President of the Chinese Sociological Association, and Advisor of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission.
