Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
More than two hundred years ago, "Red Hair" Caron of the MacDonald family in the Scottish Highlands led his wife and children across thousands of mountains and rivers from Scotland to the distant New World, where they multiplied and thrived in the land with dense forests and long winters. Later, the descendants of Red Hair Caron left the island of Cape Breton one after another, scattered on the beaches of California, the mining areas of South America, the deserts of Africa... But no matter how far they go, Cape Breton is always an eternal concern lingering in their hearts. The summer singing to the giant whale, the back of the boy chasing the rainbow, those legends about loyalty and betrayal, in the storm of the years, turned into a warm and heavy sigh:
“When we are loved, we become better.”
The story of "A Sigh from Cape Breton" travels between the "present" and the "past". The protagonist Alexander MacDonald has long left his hometown and his memory of the past has become vague, but his interactions with his brother and sister often make him inadvertently recall his childhood life and stories of his ancestors. He finally understands the deep blood ties and the love for his homeland that transcends all pain and suffering.
This is also a work about cultural origins, a miniature version of the history of Scottish immigration. Through personal growth and family changes, Alistair MacLeod shows the turbulent Canadian cultural landscape over the past two centuries and explores the process of mutual repulsion and coexistence between different languages and cultures.
