About the Author  · · · · · ·

Mao Dun (1896-1981), born Shen Dehong, with the courtesy name Yanbing, was born in Wuzhen, Tongxiang, Zhejiang. Mao Dun was a highly representative and groundbreaking writer during the second decade of modern Chinese literature (1928-June 1937). In addition to his numerous achievements in literary theory and the translation and introduction of foreign literature, Mao Dun played a pivotal role in the field of novel writing—he was the most prominent novelist to completely transform the immature state of May Fourth-era novellas and long novels, leading them to perfection. His representative works include "Midnight," the "Eclipse" trilogy ("Disillusionment," "Vacillation," "Pursuit"), "The Shop of the Lin Family," and the "Rural Trilogy" ("Spring Silkworms," "Autumn Harvest," "Winter's Chill").
