"Chinese in Others: A History of Modern Chinese Immigration" uses the style of big history and big narrative to integrate the 500-year history of Chinese immigrants into the world into the big framework of the development and changes of the world pattern during the same period, which is very insightful. More importantly, on the basis of showing the wonderful picture of the 500-year history of Chinese immigrants around the world, Professor Kong has powerfully demonstrated his important point: the history of overseas Chinese is an integral part of Chinese history and an indispensable part of studying Chinese history. As a result, the study of overseas Chinese has been elevated to a new level.
From colonial rulers to enslaved subjects, from the ruling groups in power in the nation-state after independence to the intellectual elites full of nationalist passion; from the tycoons who boss around to the common people who work hard to make a living, the "Chinese" and the surrounding "others" present a complex interactive relationship. As outsiders, overseas Chinese need to know and understand "others" and coexist with them; and the latter also constantly scrutinize these strangers from afar: Are they new friends who can live in peace and seek common development, or are they aliens with ulterior motives?
