This book explores what is truly important in life through the confusion experienced by a young boy during his growth, and has influenced generations of readers, including the animation master Hayao Miyazaki.
This book is a novel that Miyazaki read from the age of 10 to 70. It has a wonderful fate with Miyazaki: Miyazaki read an excerpt from the book in a textbook when he was in elementary school, and soon after he saw it again in a second-hand bookstore near his home and bought it; nearly 60 years later, he still remembers the book vividly, and wrote in his autobiography: "Until now, I still clearly remember the feeling when I first opened "What kind of life do you want to live", and a surge of nostalgia surged in my heart for no reason." In 2017, Miyazaki, who was nearly 80 years old, announced that he was making a movie and directly chose "What kind of life do you want to live" as the title of the movie. As Miyazaki said, "This book conveys the belief that no matter how difficult and cruel the times are, we must live like a real person."
This book was selected as a Japanese textbook due to its profound and timeless content. It was highly praised by famous Chinese and Japanese scholars. The total sales of its various versions topped the Japanese book list in 2018, and it led the Japanese middle school teachers' vote for the "Send You a Book Award". "What kind of life do you want to live" was shortlisted for Japan's 2018 Buzzword Award, and was hotly discussed by all walks of life in Japanese society, becoming a cultural phenomenon.
