Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
The book consists of two parts. Klingsor's Last Summer is a novella written by Hesse in 1919. At that time, the First World War had just ended and the world had not yet recovered from the chaos. Millions of soldiers, prisoners of war and civilians returned to the freedom they both longed for and feared from years of rigid and unified obedience. Some young people were dragged away by the war in their childhood, and now they have "returned", but they have to face a completely unfamiliar real world. For "old people" like Hesse, those worldviews that were once highly recognized have become ridiculous and absurd yesterday's news. Everything has become suspicious and disturbing. In such a summer, a farewell summer, full of power and light, temptation and charm, filled with the fragrance of southern sunshine and wine, the painter Klingsor transformed into Li Bai, and roamed, drank and debated with his friends Du Fu, Louis and the Armenian astrologer. Finally, at the end of summer, he used up all the fuel of his life and completed the final painting.
The second part, "Wanderings", is a collection of essays and poems written by Hesse.
This is the first collection of autobiographical works by Nobel Prize winner Hesse in China. Following Siddhartha and The Joy of Garden, this is a masterpiece you cannot miss.
This book is about summer, colors, dreams, as well as wine, poetry and art; perhaps Hesse's most imaginative work, with words as intertwined and blurred as a palette.
In this book, you can see not only Hesse himself, but also Li Bai, Du Fu, and Armenian astrologers. But whether you are an ignorant teenager or a calm old man, you can find your own self-portrait in this book.
