The Decameron (1348-1353) is the first great realistic work in the history of European literature. The work begins with a prologue that describes what happened when ten young men and women took refuge in a villa in the countryside against the backdrop of the plague in Florence. Each of the ten young men told a story every day, and a total of 100 stories were told in ten days, hence the name The Decameron. Each story varies in length and covers a wide range of topics, and humanistic thought is a main thread throughout the book.

Boccaccio (1313-1375) was an Italian humanist writer and a pioneer of the Renaissance. He studied law in his youth, and later came into contact with the nobles and humanists in the court of King Robert of Naples, and devoted himself to studying ancient cultural classics. In addition to The Decameron, his major works include legends, epics, narrative poems, sonnets, short story collections and essays.
Wang Yongnian (1927-2012), also known as Wang Zhongnian, was born in Dinghai, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from St. John's University in Shanghai in 1947 and is fluent in English, Russian, Spanish, Italian and other languages. He has been engaged in foreign literature research and translation since the 1950s. His translations include Jerusalem Liberation, The Decameron, The Complete Novels of O. Henry, East of Eden, The Betrothed, On the Road, and The Collected Works of Borges (co-translated).
