About the content · · · · · ·
The Melancholy of Resistance is a novel written by Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai in 1989, and it is also the original work for Béla Tarr's film Werckmeister Harmonies.

·

The novel revolves around several characters, including Mrs. Eszter, Mrs. Pflaum, and the young Valuska, unfolding a series of fragmented narratives that depict the chaotic events in a small Hungarian town: a giant whale is brought to town by a circus, and onlookers harbor various motives and intentions. Soon, rumors spread through the town, alleging that the circus performers are secretly plotting an evil scheme. Frightened citizens cling to any semblance of order they can find to criticize—music, cosmology, fascism, and so on.

·

The Melancholy of Resistance is a challenging and pessimistic book, an author's satire on the internal revolution in Hungary. However, through the author's surrealist brushstrokes and highly跳跃 narrative structure, we can still feel the beauty of László's unique linguistic artistry. His distinctive long and complex sentences pose a reading challenge even for Hungarian readers. The sophisticated phrasing and syntax, meticulously polished, present a delicate yet rough, complex, grand, and rhythmic appearance. It is said that the English translator of his works received a translation award because critics believed he "invented a Krasznahorkai-esque English."
