Lao She (February 3, 1899 - August 24, 1966), whose real name was Shu Qingchun and whose pen name was Sheyu, was a member of the Zhenghong Banner of the Manchu ethnic group in Beijing. He was a famous modern Chinese novelist, writer and dramatist. He was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and drowned himself in the Taiping Lake northwest of Beijing in the late night of August 24, 1966, at the age of 67.
