Ida Calhoun's deeply personal investigation into the complexities of being a midlife woman today is stunning. Calhoun captures the voices of more than 200 women from across the country—some broken, some resilient, some barely hanging on—and in the process shows how much of our experience is shared in these divisive times. You'll recognize yourself in this book, breathe a sigh of relief, and think, I'm not alone.

By placing this situation in the context of generations before and after, she makes sense of why we are so surprised that we don't have it all. "Having it all" was the rallying cry of the baby boomers as, aided by new family planning tools, we escaped the pink ghettos of secretarial offices and endless childcare to seek fulfillment in workaholic careers. Two generations later, desperate Gen X women are finding that the glass mountain of fulfillment remains unclimbable. With deep insight, wisdom, and sophisticated analysis, Ida Calhoun tells us why, tracing the internal and external forces that separate women from the peace they have spent their lives seeking.
