Introduction
In 1986, Paul Theroux came to China again after six years.
He visited not only bustling cities like Beijing and Shanghai, but also border areas like Langxiang in Heilongjiang and Turpan in Xinjiang. He walked across China and chatted with all kinds of people, including young people practicing speaking in the English corner of Shanghai People's Park, students who wanted to do import and export business, and intellectuals who had just experienced a catastrophe... He used a sharp and humorous tone to constantly complain along the way, but also used a calm and rational perspective to analyze the character of the Chinese people and discover the daily life and ideological changes of the Chinese people under the changing times.
Since the 1980s, we have experienced tremendous changes, but our current swings and difficulties seem familiar.

Recommendation
He is a great reporter who always asks the questions on your mind… He has the gift of an artist who can turn the ordinary into something magical.
——The Independent
"On the Land of China" records Paul Theroux's one-year travel experience in China. He was extremely sharp-tongued during the trip... Out of strong curiosity, he kept chatting up strangers, such as Mr. Fang, a melancholy man, and mountaineer Chris Bonington. But most importantly, this book also allows us to get to know the author better - if you want to travel around the world without leaving home, he is your ideal travel companion.
—The Sunday Times
This is not a travelogue, but an in-depth and detailed observation and record of the dramatic changes in China in the mid-1980s. The author can be regarded as a pioneer and master of He Wei. His travels across the east, west, south and north, unique perspectives and calm analysis surpass the vast majority of Chinese people so far.
