Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
Sal is a young writer who is curious and passionate about literature, jazz and women. He often discusses philosophy, literature and creation with his friends in New York. Dean, who is passionate and wild, suddenly breaks into this circle. Sal's life is facing a turning point, so he decides to follow Dean's steps "on the road" to realize his dream of going west.
The novel tells the story of Sal and Dean's four road trips across the American continent from their perspective. In the chaotic, exciting, sincere and crazy journey, they met tramps, farmers, workers and ethnic minorities. These people were also in the "golden age", but the promised "American dream" was drowned in fantasy and bubbles. Sal and Dean indulged in jazz and sex, opening the door to experience life and infinite possibilities. They burned themselves and explored the world to their heart's content, pursuing the true meaning of life and the freedom of the soul.
This book is Kerouac's autobiographical novel. In 1951, Kerouac, who was nearly 30 years old, wrote this book in just three weeks on a scroll of more than 30 meters. After being rejected many times, On the Road, which he revised six times, was finally published in 1957. After that, this book caused a sensation in the United States and swept the world, becoming a timeless literary classic. Kerouac is also regarded as the spiritual leader of the new generation, inspiring countless young people to follow his footsteps to find the true meaning of life.
About the Author · · · · · ·
Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) was a novelist and poet who was born in Massachusetts, USA, to French-Canadian parents. He entered Columbia University on a football scholarship, then dropped out to work as a sailor on a merchant ship. He also briefly joined the Navy, but because he could not stand the constraints of military discipline, he was admitted to a psychiatric ward and was discharged.
Escape and pursuit ran through Kerouac's life. The alienation of his identity and the language barrier made him always wander on the edge of society. He called himself an "outsider" of the times and society, and was always looking for his own voice. During his time in New York, Kerouac met Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Neal Cassady and others, and created "On the Road" based on their and his own personal experiences. This book is hailed as a classic work that defines the "Beat Generation". It is still a best-seller and is included in the required reading list of humanities general education courses in American universities. He also wrote "Dharma Bums", "Underground Man" and "Lone Traveler" and other works.
