Introduction · · · · · ·
Notes from Underground is a novel written by Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The book is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, the Underground Man, a retired civil servant in his forties. He is full of morbid inferiority complex, but he often analyzes himself. The book consists of two parts: the first part is the long monologue of the Underground Man, which explores philosophical topics such as free will, human irrationality, and historical irrationality. The second part is the Underground Man's tracing of his past and how he met a prostitute, Lisa.
Notes from Underground is not only Dostoyevsky's masterpiece, but also foreshadows his five important novels later on: Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Devils, The Boy, and The Brothers Karamazov. The book is also considered a turning point in Dostoyevsky's creative process. Nobel Prize winner Gide believes that "this novel is the pinnacle of his writing career, his masterpiece, or, if you like, the key to his thoughts."
