About the Author

Giuseppe Ungaretti

(Giuseppe Ungaretti, 1888-1970)

A pioneer of the Italian modernist poetry movement, a representative of the hermit school, and an important Italian poet in the 20th century. Influenced by French symbolism in his early years, Ungaretti integrated Italian classical lyric poetry with symbolist poetic techniques to create rhythmic short poems. He pushed Italian poetry towards modernism; in his later years, he returned to the traditional Italian syntax and rhythmic structure, becoming one of the most influential Italian poets. His poems express the worries of people and civilization facing great disasters, and provide people with Resonance and comfort of the soul.
