Introduction · · · · · ·
The story of Orlando begins in the Elizabethan era in the 16th century and ends in the present time when Woolf stopped writing in 1928, a period of four hundred years. Orlando was originally a beautiful aristocratic boy, innocent and fascinated by poetry. He entered the court because he was favored by the queen. After King James ascended the throne, the Great Frost came. Orlando met a Russian princess and fell in love with her, but suffered double betrayal in literature and love. After a fire in Constantinople, Orlando became a woman. She first mingled with the gypsies, and then returned to Britain to become a lady in the upper class. Entering the Victorian era, in order to continue writing, Orlando had to compromise with the spirit of the times. At the end of the story, Orlando has become an award-winning poet in the 20th century. She returns to the mansion that runs through the whole book, comes under the big oak tree, and reviews her eternal pursuit of literature and poetry.

This book is a biography written by Woolf for a fictional character. It is written in a light-hearted and humorous language and has a fantastic conception. It is hailed as a feminist classic and a pioneering work that tells the story of the "second sex" from a literary perspective.
