Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
Every book has its own skeleton under its cover. As an analytical reader, your responsibility is to find this skeleton. When a book appears in front of you, it is wrapped in bones and clothes wrapped in muscles. It can be said to be dressed up. You don't need to uncover its outer coat or tear off its muscles to get to the skeleton under the soft skin, but you must use a pair of X-ray eyes to look at the book, because that is the basis for you to understand a book and grasp its skeleton.
How to Read a Book was first published in 1940 and revised in 1972. No matter when you read it, you will be impressed by the author's deep attention to reading and broad vision. People who don't know how to read or are just beginning to explore reading can avoid unnecessary mistakes by reading this book. People who have some experience in reading can gain deeper insights and understanding by reading this book. This is a classic about reading that will never fade.
About the Author · · · · · ·
Mortimer J. Adler (1902-2001) is renowned for his scholar, educator, and editor. In addition to writing How to Read a Book, he is also well-known for editing The Classics of the Western World and serving as the editorial director of the 15th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica in 1974.
Charles Van Doren (1926-) was a professor at Columbia University in the United States. He left the position for some reason and worked with Adler. On the one hand, he assisted Adler in editing the Encyclopedia Britannica, and on the other hand, he made substantial additions and revisions to the first edition of the book in 1940. Therefore, the new edition of the book in 1970 was jointly signed by the two.
