Synopsis · · · · · ·
The Little Prince is an extraordinary child, living on a small planet only slightly larger than himself. He is accompanied by a small rose that he loves very much. But the rose's vanity hurts the Little Prince's feelings for her. The Little Prince bids farewell to his asteroid and embarks on a journey through space. He visits six planets, and the things he sees make him sad; he finds adults absurd, ridiculous, and abnormal. Only on the planet of a lamplighter does the Little Prince find someone who can be a friend. But the lamplighter's world is very small, unable to accommodate a second person besides the lamplighter himself. Guided by a geographer, the lonely Little Prince comes to Earth, where humans live.
The Little Prince discovers that humans lack imagination, only repeating what others have said like parrots. The Little Prince then misses the little rose on his planet more and more. Later, the Little Prince meets a fox. The Little Prince patiently tames the fox and becomes close friends with it. The fox gives the Little Prince a secret as a gift—the essence of things cannot be seen with the naked eye, only perceived with the heart. With this secret, the Little Prince finds the spring of life in the Sahara Desert with the endangered pilot. Finally, the Little Prince leaves Earth with the help of a snake and returns to his asteroid B612.
The fairy tale describes how the Little Prince is not conquered by the deceitful world of adults, but ultimately finds his ideal. This ideal is the love that connects all things in the universe, a love that is lacking in the world. Therefore, the Little Prince often expresses a sense of melancholy. In his dedication, the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry says: This book is for the child who grew up to be an adult.
"The Little Prince" has not only won over child readers but is also loved by adults. The condensed language of the work is permeated with the author's profound thoughts on humanity and human civilization. Its satire and fantasy, genuine emotion and philosophy, have made it one of the most famous fairy tale novels in France and indeed the world.
