Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
Notes from a Mountain Dwelling was written by Yu Qiuyu in more than two years between 1992 and 1994. It consists of eleven articles. During the writing period, the author resigned from his position at the academy and stopped working. At the same time, writing was combined with investigation, and he visited many of the places he wrote about again and again.
In the author's overall plan, this "Notes from a Mountain Dwelling" is the second phase of his exploration of Chinese civilization in a direct and perceptive way. The first phase of the record is "Cultural Journey", in which he carries the confusion of life and goes to find cultural relics and cultural sites one by one, and then tells readers his surprise and emotion. But when he finished walking and writing, he found that there are still many holistic problems beyond the specific relics that need to be explored. The author classifies these problems into: the mutual coveting and life and death of political achievements and cultural complexes; the exile, destruction and revival of cultural souls; the narrow encounter and passing by of commercial civilization and Chinese culture; the merits of the millennium imperial examination left to social history and the harm left to collective personality; the inevitability of the cessation of rare personality in Chinese culture and the necessity of memorializing; the ubiquity and difficulty of distinguishing the important boundary between gentlemen and villains.
