-Editor's Recommendation-
Did the Germans use gas chambers to kill Jews?
——If the answer is "yes", there must be a living witness who can prove that he died in the gas chamber. However, if we can't find such a person, then the gas chamber is purely fictional?
★ French postmodern thinker Jean-Jacques Lyotard's masterpiece
——Starting from criticizing the above-mentioned sophistry, he started to think about language, power and human nature; he proposed the concept of "different consciousness" and questioned the "consensus" that would eventually lead to a grand narrative, which has a distinct postmodern humanistic color.
★ Experimental combination of European tradition and analytical trends
- Integrate Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language into Kantian critique of historical rationality; integrate the doctrines or key concepts of many important thinkers in the history of Western philosophy, and reactivate classical ideas through creative transformation.
★ Fully presents the ethical and political depth of postmodernism
——This work, written in a zero-degree style, is a powerful counterattack against revisionism that reshapes history in the name of "facts" and "truth", and emphasizes the uniqueness of survival and the dignity of individual narratives.
-Content Introduction-
This book is a text that Lyotard himself considers to be extremely complex and philosophical, which he completed over a period of nine years (1974-1983). During this period, Lyotard also wrote The Postmodern Condition and The Game of Justice. This book continues and develops the discussion of language games in these two earlier texts, producing a more inclusive philosophy of phrases, and thinking more deeply about contemporary knowledge, ethics, art and politics than they did.
The book covers a wide range of topics, including analysis of the Holocaust, modernity, ethics, history and politics, all of which are linked to his heterodox views. He highlights the ways in which certain phrases are silenced or excluded by dominant discourse types. This book provides the theoretical foundation for Lyotard's later work and has been hugely influential in the humanities. It is a central text that any critic who takes Lyotard's work seriously cannot avoid.
-Media Recommendation-
With Dissensus Lyotard offers us what he calls “a philosophy book.” … He has boldly embarked on a monumental undertaking, alone and at his own risk: to bring philosophy into step with our times.
——Le Monde
Lyotard's book can be understood in three different ways: as a stage in the construction of a philosophical work; as an awareness of a contemporary problem; and as an attempt to describe the current state of knowledge. In reality, these three aspects are obviously linked together, and one of the strengths of Lyotard's thought has always been the desire to insert itself into the environment in which he and his readers live.

-About the Author-
Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) is a French philosopher. He was named a poststructuralist because he tried to criticize deconstructionism with Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology and Lacan's theory with Freud's psychoanalysis in his doctoral thesis "Discourse, Figure". He was later considered the founder of postmodernism because of the publication of "The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge". Based on his research on the continuity and change of modernity and postmodernity, he conducted philosophical reflection and criticism on the political, economic, cultural and artistic phenomena of contemporary society. His major works include "Inhumanity: A Discourse on Time" and "Libido Economy".
