The book is prefaced and introduced by Beauvoir's adopted daughter, and is accompanied by precious photos, manuscripts and letters of Beauvoir.

When Sylvie was nine years old, she first met Andrea, a girl of the same age as her. She had never seen such a cool girl before. Unlike the obedient "good student" Sylvie, Andrea was smart but rebellious, and she was ambivalent about everything. She had experienced terrible burns and had marks of fire on her body. In order to refuse to participate in social activities, she did not hesitate to chop herself with an axe.
They became inseparable. This love was passionate and deep in their souls. They started by defying the school rules together. The obedient Sylvie gradually moved towards freedom; the unruly Andrei, however, struggled step by step under the constraints of family and etiquette, and gradually became trapped.

In Beauvoir's life, there were two losses that had a profound impact on her: one was the loss of her faith in God, and the other was the death of her close friend Zaza. For at least 30 years after Zaza's death, Beauvoir felt that her freedom was bought with Zaza's life. - "Beauvoir's Biography"
Together we struggled against the repulsive fate that lay before us, and for a long time I believed that her death was the price I paid for my freedom. - Simone de Beauvoir, The Gentlewoman
