【Content Introduction】
Bergman: My fear is about the emotions that are consumed, the silent pain that people hide. I believe - at least I want to believe - that the greatest mission of film is to hold up a mirror for the audience, so that people can see themselves and others in it, and see the most hidden emotions in human nature, those emotions that those in powerful positions in our society try their best to deny.
This collection includes more than 80 articles published by Bergman from the 1930s to the 1990s, including essays, private letters, diaries, film criticism, literary reviews, lecture manuscripts, etc., which fully present the mental journey of how a young man who is full of interest in film and drama, well-read and has a dream of becoming a writer became a heavyweight film master and dramatist in history.
In the book, Bergman easily navigates through different subjects with his sharp philosophical thinking. Whether he is summarizing the essence of art, explaining the on- and behind-the-scenes work of film, or criticizing current social issues, he can use vivid and vivid language to present his thoughts to readers. His ridicule and anger at film critics and audiences, and his questioning and ridicule of himself, also vividly show a little-known side of Bergman.
