About the Author

[Japanese] Ryuichi Sakamoto

Born in Tokyo on January 17, 1952, he received a master's degree from Tokyo University of the Arts. He made his official solo debut in 1978 with the album "Thousand Swords" and formed the "Yellow Magic Orchestra" (YMO) in the same year. After the "Yellow Magic Orchestra" disbanded in 1983, he released works such as BEAUTY, "Music Atlas", "Asynchronous" and "12". He is known worldwide for his innovative musical pursuits.

In terms of film music, he won the 37th British Academy Film Awards for Best Original Score for "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence", the 60th Academy Awards for Best Original Score and the 45th American Film and Television Golden Globe Awards for Best Original Score for "The Last Emperor". He also won many awards including the Grammy Awards for Film and Television Music.

He actively attempts cross-border artistic creation and has participated in activities including stage works LIFE, "Time" and large-scale installation art exhibitions in China and South Korea.

He has also advocated for many environmental and peace-related issues, and initiated the forest conservation and restoration project "More Trees". In addition, he founded the Tohoku Youth Orchestra to support music activities for children in the disaster-stricken areas after the "3.11" Great East Japan Earthquake.

Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away on March 28, 2023.
