-Content Introduction-
Jacques Lacan is arguably the most original and influential psychoanalytic thinker since Freud. His ideas have not only revolutionized the clinical practice of psychoanalysis, but continue to be a major influence in fields as diverse as film studies, literary criticism, feminist theory, and philosophy. Lacan's work is known for its complexity and specificity of style, and this book is invaluable reading for all the disciplines it has influenced.
This book provides detailed definitions of more than 200 of Lacan's terms, focusing on how Lacan used common psychoanalytic terms and how his own terminology developed through the different stages of his teaching. The book also discusses the historical and institutional context of Lacan's thought in detail, tracing each major concept back to its origins in the works of Freud, Saussure, Hegel, and others.
This book emphasizes the clinical basis of Lacan's thought. It is a very practical tool book for psychoanalysts in training and practice. For readers of other disciplines, this book is also an ideal reading guide and a good starting point for understanding Lacan's thought.
