"COVID Diary" by Paul Giordano, author of "The Loneliness of Prime Numbers" and PhD in particle physics
During the pandemic, no one is an island
“We never thought of getting permission for dumping garbage.
We never thought about organizing our daily lives according to the news bulletins from the Ministry of Civil Defense.
We also never thought that someone would die without their loved ones by their side.
This shouldn’t be happening here, around us.”
"We in the Corona Era" can be seen as the "Corona Diary" of Italian writer Paolo Giordano, which records the social conditions in Italy in the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak and makes profound reflections on the fate of the human community.
In February 2020, the new coronavirus began to rage in Italy. On March 4, Italy announced a nationwide suspension of classes. Paolo Giordano, a famous Italian writer, quickly wrote down his observations and thoughts. He said, "I am not afraid of getting sick. But I am afraid of the changes that the virus may cause. I am afraid that everything will be reset to zero, but I am more afraid that all this will be in vain and will not bring any changes." So, just like Freud wrote down his dreams after waking up, Giordano also tried to record his current feelings when the new coronavirus epidemic was spreading. Starting from mathematical concepts, he tells the impact of the pandemic on humans, and combined with his own personal experience, he further reflects on the backlash of environmental destruction on humans. The whole work is short and concise, with a lofty perspective, and is a precious specimen of the times.
