Introduction
The second volume of Xu Zhiyuan's "Liang Qichao Five Volumes" tells the story of Liang Qichao going global. After the failure of the Reform Movement of 1898, Liang Qichao was forced to go into exile in Japan, but he unexpectedly stepped onto the wave of globalization and burst out with strong vitality on the vast world stage. During this period, Liang Qichao was based in Yokohama, Japan, and successively founded magazines such as "Qingyi Bao", "Xinmin Congbao" and "Xin Xiaoshuo", which promoted the production and dissemination of new knowledge and new ideas in the Chinese world, with a huge and far-reaching impact; at the same time, he traveled to Hawaii, Australia, North America and other places, echoing the widely awakened political consciousness of overseas Chinese and establishing a global network of the Royalist Protection Society.
This book restores the historical scenes with a lot of details, and creates an image of a political exile with rich emotional dimensions; with Liang Qichao as the center, it leads to Yan Fu and other reform colleagues, Sun Yat-sen and other revolutionaries, as well as Li Hongzhang, Okuma Shigenobu, Theodore Roosevelt and other politicians, as well as Ye En in Vancouver, Qiu Shuyuan in Singapore, Mei Quang-tat in Sydney and other overseas Chinese scattered around the world. Their enthusiasm and struggles play out a picture of the global situation at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
At the age of 30, Liang Qichao reflected on China's predicament with the world's experience. He gradually separated himself from Kang Youwei, gained intellectual independence, and reached a critical moment of ideological maturity. From "Reform" to "New People", Liang Qichao once again promoted "reform".
