William Faulkner (1897-1962) is one of the most influential writers in the history of American literature and a representative of stream-of-consciousness literature. Born into a declining landowner family, he served in the Canadian Air Force during World War I. After the war, he dropped out of college for one year and devoted himself to writing after 1925. He wrote 19 novels and more than 70 short stories in his lifetime, most of which took place in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, known as the "Yoknapatawpha Lineage". His representative works include The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930), A Rose for Emily (1930), Light in August (1932), Absalom, Absalom! (1936), and Go, Moses (1942). In 1949, Faulkner won the Nobel Prize in Literature for "his powerful and artistically incomparable contribution to contemporary American fiction."
