About the Author · · · · · ·
Daniel Keyes (1927-2014) was born in New York City and holds a degree in psychology from Brooklyn College. In the early 1950s, he worked for Marvel Science Stories magazine, then changed careers to become a fashion photographer and middle school teacher. He later received a degree in English and American literature from Brooklyn College.
In 1959, Keyes published his debut short story Flowers for Algernon in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, which won the Hugo Award. In 1966, it was expanded into a novel and won the Nebula Award of the same year, winning the two most important science fiction awards. This work, which explores the physical and psychological changes of the mentally disabled protagonist Charlie Gordon and the white mouse Algernon after medical intervention, has been adapted into movies three times. The first adapted movie, Charly, won the Oscar for Best Actor for the leading actor Cliff Robertson. Japan's NHK TV station also adapted it into a TV series Flowers for Hamsters in 2003, and France, Poland and the United Kingdom have successively adapted it into stage plays. The latest Japanese drama, the second adaptation, was written by Shinji Nojima and aired in April 2015.
After the great success of Flowers for Algernon, Keys published other works, including Sally No. 5, 24 Billy, Billy's War, and the memoir Algernon, Charlie, and Me. Both Sally No. 5 and 24 Billy explore multiple personality disorders, making Keys the best writer in the eyes of readers who describes human psychology with a medical background. 24 Billy was also adapted into the movie The Crowded Room by Warner Bros.
Keyes's works have been translated into more than 30 languages around the world, with sales exceeding 6 million copies. In 1988, Brooklyn College awarded Keyes the Honorary Alumni Medal; in 2000, the Science Fiction Society of America awarded Keyes the "Lifetime Honorary Writer Award" in recognition of his outstanding achievements in science fiction. On June 15, 2014, Keyes died of complications from pneumonia at his home in southern Florida.
