Ji Xianlin was born in Qingping County (now Linqing City), Shandong Province in 1911. He is a professor at Peking University, a member of the Philosophy and Social Sciences Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Chinese linguist, literary translator, historian, educator, and an expert in Sanskrit, Tocharian, and Pali. In 1930, he was admitted to the Western Languages ​​Department of Tsinghua University in Beijing. After graduating in 1934, he taught at Shandong Provincial High School in Jinan. In 1935, he was admitted as an exchange graduate student at Tsinghua University and went to Germany to study ancient languages ​​such as Sanskrit, Pali, and Tocharian at the University of Göttingen. He received a doctorate in philosophy in 1941. He returned to China in 1946 and served as a professor at Peking University and a professor and dean of the Department of Oriental Languages ​​and Literature. As a scholar who was well-versed in both Chinese and Western studies and had a long-standing reputation, he made important contributions to the study of Indian Mesomorphology, primitive Buddhist languages, the semantics of Tocharian, and Sanskrit literature. His major works include "Language Problems in Primitive Buddhism", "A Brief History of India", "Essays on the History of Sino-Indian Cultural Relations", "Essays on Ancient Indian Languages", "On Issues of the Mahayana Theravada", "A Preliminary Exploration of the Ramayana", "Shadows of the Heart of India", "Langdong Collection", "Essays of Ji Xianlin", etc.; his translations include "Shakuntala", "Uripaska", "Ramayana", "Anna Segers's Short Stories", "Five Volumes", etc.; he edited the "Catalogue of the Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature Series".
