Stendhal (1783-1842), originally named Marie-Henri Beyle, was a 19th-century French critical realist writer.
He had a turbulent life, experienced the French Revolution, the July Revolution, etc. He worshipped Napoleon and pursued freedom and democracy. He worked as an army officer, clerk, store clerk, diplomatic ambassador, etc., and later became a writer. He wandered in France, Italy, Russia and other places, especially favoring Milan. He remained unmarried throughout his life, but never stopped yearning for love.
When he was alive, he wandered on the edge of the literary world and once set the worst sales record. Later, he became famous for his accurate psychological analysis of characters and concise writing style. His representative works include "The Red and the Black", "Armance", "Traveler's Notes", "The Charterhouse of Parma", etc.
He was buried in the Montmartre Cemetery in Paris on March 24, 1842. The tombstone reads: Here lies Arrigo Beyle, a Milanese, who lived, loved and wrote.
