Heinz Kohut (1913-1981), founder of self psychology, former president of the American Psychoanalytic Association, former vice president of the International Psychoanalytic Association, former vice director of the Sigmund Freud Archives, and member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the Cross of Honor by the Austrian government. He insisted that psychological defects rather than conflicts were the cause of many people's illnesses and was the main challenger to traditional American self psychology since the 1970s.
