Robert Leighton, born in 1944, is a famous British anthropologist, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Anthropology at Durham University, and a Fellow of the British Academy. He studied at the Department of Anthropology at University College London and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Sussex, and received his doctorate in 1973. His doctoral thesis studied social changes in rural France. His research covers a wide range of fields, including art, archaeology, and anthropological theory. He has published The Anthropology of Art, Australian Rock Art: A New Synthesis, and An Introduction to Theory in Anthropology, and edited The Archaeology and Anthropology of Landscape: Shaping Your Landscape and Hunting and Gathering: A Cross-Cultural Perspective.
