Sir Ernst Gombrich (1909-2001) was born in Vienna and studied art history at the University of Vienna. In 1936, he moved to the UK and entered Warburg University of London. He was the Slade Professor of Fine Arts at Oxford University, a visiting professor at Harvard, Cornell and other universities, and was knighted by the King of England in 1972. His academic activities cover a wide range, and he has published works in the fields of linguistic theory, Chinese grammar, literature and art, catalog version, and ancient book compilation. He is particularly interested in the collection and research of ancient Chinese documents, and is currently a member of the National Cultural Relics Appraisal Committee.
