The Story of Art summarizes the development of art from the earliest cave paintings to today's experimental art, explaining that art history is "a history of constantly winding and changing traditions, in which each work looks back to the past and points to the future.
Following the 1997 Sanlian edition of "The Story of Art", the British Phaidon Press authorized Guangxi Fine Arts Publishing House to publish it exclusively, which is also the only legally authorized version in China.

Sir Ernst Gombrich (1909-2001) was born in Vienna and studied art history at the University of Vienna. In 1936, he moved to the UK and entered Warburg University of London. He was the Slade Professor of Fine Arts at Oxford University, a visiting professor at Harvard, Cornell and other universities, and was knighted by the King of England in 1972. His major academic works include The Story of Art, The Sense of Order, and The Symbolic Image. Gombrich was good at expressing serious topics in simple and clear language so that beginners can learn easily.
Fan Jingzhong was born in Tianjin in November 1951. He was admitted to the Department of Philosophy of Beijing Normal University in 1977. In 1979, he entered Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts to study art theory and obtained a master's degree. He served as the editor-in-chief of "Art Translation Series" and "New Art", professor, doctoral supervisor, library director, and editor-in-chief of the publishing house at the China Academy of Art.
Yang Chengkai, pen name Lin Xi. Born in 1941, from Zhaoyuan City, Shandong Province. Graduated from the Department of Linguistics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1981 with a master's degree. He has been engaged in research work at the Institute of Linguistics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences since 1981, and has served as a researcher. His academic activities cover a wide range, and he has published works in the fields of linguistic theory, Chinese grammar, literature and art, catalog version, and ancient book compilation. He is particularly interested in the collection and research of ancient Chinese documents, and is currently a member of the National Cultural Relics Appraisal Committee. His main works include "Research on Chinese Grammar Theory", and other works can be found in relevant professional journals.
