Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French historian and sociologist. His major representative works include Democracy in America and The Old Regime and the Revolution. He was born into an aristocratic family and experienced five "dynasties" (the First French Empire, the Bourbon Restoration, the July Monarchy, the Second French Republic, and the Second French Empire). He was enthusiastic about politics in the early days. In 1838, he served as a member of the House of Representatives. After the February Revolution in 1848, he participated in the formulation of the Constitution of the Second Republic and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs for a time in 1849. In 1851, Louis Bonaparte established the Second Empire. Tocqueville became increasingly disappointed with politics and gradually faded out of the political stage. He gradually realized that he was "better at thinking than doing."
