Without a deep understanding of Zhang Ailing's life and interpersonal relationships, it is difficult to understand "Little Reunion". The "Comparison Notes" included in this book is the best key to interpret the various clues and characters in it. Speaking of this book, Zhang Ailing said: "People who have read "Rumors" can tell at a glance that it contains the content of "Private Whispers" and "The Remains of Ashes" (Hong Kong War), although they are as different as "Rashomon". It can be seen that if you want to understand "Little Reunion", you must be familiar with Zhang Ailing's essays. The protagonist of all Zhang Ailing's essays is Zhang Ailing herself, and here are her life experiences and feelings.
After reading "Little Reunion", you can read her prose works, so that you can truly understand Zhang Ailing's life experience and artistic pursuit in different periods. And not only "Private Whispers" and "Remaining Records of Ashes", but also "Gorgeous Fate" and "Comparison Notes"... The protagonist of all Zhang Ailing's prose is Zhang Ailing herself, and here are her life experiences and feelings. - Zhi'an
Zhang Ailing's literary career began with her essays. Even if she had never written a novel, her essays would have made her one of the best essayists in China in the 20th century. - Chen Zishan
"Revisiting the Border Town" is the only article in Zhang Ailing's life that describes Taiwan. In the autumn of 1961, Zhang Ailing first went to Taiwan and then visited Hong Kong. Zhang Ailing wrote this travelogue in English in 1963, A Return To The Frontier, and rewrote it in Chinese in the 1980s. In Zhang Ailing's eyes, Taiwan and Hong Kong are both "border towns" hanging on the edge of the mainland, and Taiwan, which is separated from the Chinese mainland by a river, has a completely different style from Hong Kong, which borders the mainland. Through her sharp pen, we can see the cultural characteristics of Taiwan that have long been forgotten today, as well as the colorful and fragrant life of Hong Kong citizens in the old days.
This book includes reading notes and review articles such as "Good Articles in Yibao", "Emerson's Life and Works", and "Talking about Reading", as well as a large number of works reflecting Zhang Ailing's creative experience such as "Preface to Zhang Ailing's Short Story Collection" and "Preface to Zhang Kan", as well as "Comparison Notes", the only autobiographical picture and text collection in Zhang Ailing's writing career; and for the first time, 6 newly discovered lost works are included, including "A Peaceful Spring in the Style of New Year Pictures", "Preface to the Chain Trap Genesis", "Include Me", "Preface to the Record of Perplexity", "Postscript to Caolu Bing", and "Postscript to the Lines of Smile".
