THE xuan paper (宣纸, xuānzhǐ ) ^{n 1} is a traditional paper type originally from China . It takes its name from the locality of Anhui province, the city of Xuancheng (and more particularly of Jingxian (under its jurisdiction) where it is produced ¹ . It is a national geographical indication product (Chinese) ^2. We also note that the translation of the Chinese term 宣纸 xuanzhi “xuan paper” by " rice paper " is incorrect.

It is made from bark fibers of Blue Sandalwood ( Pteroceltis tatarinowii , a tree of the family hemp , the Cannabaceae ) and rice straw produced in the region. The plant fibers are exposed on the slopes of a hill, exposed to the sun, wind, and rain, for several months. The manufacturing process, long kept secret, is very long and complex. Xuan paper is pure white and has a fine, light texture. Soft and strong, it is ideal for calligraphy and painting.
