About the Author
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)
A world-renowned talented female writer, she is hailed as a pioneer of modernism and feminism in the 20th century.
Her original name was Adeline Virginia Stephen. She was born in a literary family in London, England. At the age of 9, she tried writing, using words instead of toys.
When she was 13, her mother died of illness, and when she was 22, her father died. This brought Woolf an indelible grief throughout her life and caused her to suffer two mental breakdowns.
Literary creation became Woolf's lifeline. She wrote a series of classic masterpieces such as "Mrs. Dalloway", "To the Lighthouse", "Orlando", "The Years", "Between the Acts" and "A Room of One's Own".
At the age of 59, Woolf suffered another mental breakdown. "I believe we were the happiest people in the world" - after writing a suicide note to her relatives, she jumped into the River Ouse alone.
