Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
This volume contains Chekhov's classic plays Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard, arranged in chronological order, and includes Jiao Juyin's "Postscript to the Translation of The Cherry Orchard" written in 1943. Although the stories of these three plays are different, they all express the theme that Chekhov always focused on: he hated the gray crowd that was everywhere in Russian society at the end of the 19th century, who only knew how to use some incoherent empty talk and fantasies about the "future" to enrich their empty, decadent and lazy lives. He sympathized with another group of people who worked hard but whose happiness and hope were destroyed. He used the structure, lines and background descriptions of lyric poetry to create the beginning of modern drama.
About the Author · · · · · ·
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) is a famous Russian playwright and short story master. He is considered to be an outstanding representative of the Russian realistic literary genre in the late 19th century. Drama is the pearl of his literary creation. In Europe and the United States, Chekhov's drama repertoire is second only to Shakespeare, and has a great influence on modern drama in the 20th century. Chekhov's works are characterized by concise and accurate language. He is good at exploring through the surface of life and revealing the hidden motives of the characters vividly. His excellent plays and short stories do not have complicated plots and clear answers. They focus on telling some seemingly ordinary and trivial stories, creating a special artistic atmosphere that can sometimes be called unforgettable or lyrical. His representative works include the dramas "The Cherry Orchard", "Uncle Vanya", "Three Sisters", "The Seagull", and the novels "The Chameleon", "The Death of a Clerk", "Vanka", etc.
