Translator Xu Hejin (1940-2015) was a professor at the School of Foreign Languages and Literature, Fudan University, a director of the Chinese Society of French Literature, a famous translator, and a famous Proust expert. His translations include The Rise and Fall of a Courtesan, Nana, Long Night Walk, and The Vatican Cellar. He also edited the New French-Chinese Small Dictionary, the Great Dictionary of Foreign Literature, and Practical French Letters. Since 2004, Xu Hejin has been committed to retranslating the pinnacle of French literature, Remembrance of Things Past, by himself, and had completed four and a half volumes before his death from illness.
