Description

"Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (Fine)" is Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami's most iconic parallel narrative novel. One thread depicts "Hard-Boiled Wonderland," where two major underworld organizations vie for a mind-control device invented by an old scientist. The protagonist, the old scientist, and his granddaughter narrowly escape danger through a thrilling flight. The other thread describes "the End of the World," an isolated village where inhabitants have no hearts, no goals, and live in stagnant lives. The two storylines never converge by the end of the book. Through this contrast, the author attempts to express the confusion modern people face in their life choices.
