Description

The 37-year-old male protagonist, a true success with two thriving bars in downtown Tokyo, a beautiful wife, and an adorable daughter, still feels an inner hunger and thirst that neither his career nor family can fill. What truly makes him feel complete is his elementary school girlfriend, Shimamoto. Shimamoto is unwilling to reveal her experiences or identity, only wishing for him to accept her as she is now, to see her only as the girl who loved classical music in elementary school. However, just as he accepts this seemingly impossible condition, the two spend a passionate night together at a villa in Hakone. The next morning, she vanishes without a trace.

About the Author
Haruki Murakami (1949– ), a Japanese novelist, studied drama at Waseda University's Faculty of Letters. In 1979, his first novel, "Hear the Wind Sing," was published and subsequently adapted into a film. Following this, his excellent works such as "Pinball, 1973," "A Wild Sheep Chase," and "Norwegian Wood" were successively released. His writing is unconstrained by tradition, featuring novel concepts and a free, uninhibited style that never descends into vulgarity or superficiality. He is particularly adept at portraying human loneliness and helplessness, but instead of presenting these emotions negatively, he elevates them through inner intellectual manipulation into an elegant style and a state of enjoyment. In doing so, he offers readers, especially those living in cities, a way of life or a life experience.
