One hundred thousand years ago, there were at least six different kinds of people on Earth.
But today, why are we the only ones left on the world stage?
From apes who could only eat the leftover bones of tigers and wolves to Homo sapiens who jumped to the top of the food chain,
From the primitive handprints on the walls of the Chevy Cave to the footprints of Neil Armstrong on the moon,
From cognitive revolution, agricultural revolution, to scientific revolution, biotechnology revolution,
How did we come onto the world stage and become the masters of all creation?
From the Code of Hammurabi in the 18th century BC to the American Declaration of Independence in the 18th century,
From imperialism and capitalism to liberalism and consumerism,
From animal desire to material desire, from animality and human nature to divinity,
Do we understand ourselves better? Are we happier?
What do we really want to get and become?
"Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" is the representative work of Yuval Noah Harari, a cutting-edge Israeli historian. It records the history of human development from the first signs of life 100,000 years ago to the interweaving of capital and technology in the 21st century. It weaves science and history together, explaining the development history of Homo sapiens on Earth from a completely new perspective.
The book clarifies the development of human beings from three major clues. The cognitive revolution, agricultural revolution and scientific and technological revolution have completely changed human history. The cognitive revolution has made human beings an imagined community, the agricultural revolution has trapped human beings into a trap of luxurious life, and the scientific and technological revolution will eventually make human beings like gods. Human beings connect with each other and cooperate effectively through the ability of imagination and fiction. Countries, religions and enterprises are all imagined and fictional realities. Human beings rely on this imagination to find identity and carry out cooperation, thus climbing to the top of the food chain step by step, reaching a position that other creatures cannot reach.
This is a grand brief history of mankind, which clarifies the major context that affects human development, explores the roots of human culture, religion, law, country, credit, etc., and sees the big picture from the small details, allowing mankind to re-examine ourselves and the world around us in the grand history.
