“This book is an expression of gratitude, and I hope it can lift our hearts, even in the darkest moments. Every day is precious because we are still breathing, and we can still be touched by the sun shining on a towering branch, a morning workbench, or the tombstone of a beloved poet.”

In 1994, after her husband passed away, the Polaroid Land 250 film camera helped Patti Smith get through the difficult time when she couldn't write; in 2010, she got her first mobile phone and began to use it to create art inspired by her friends; in 2018, she opened a social media account and continued to post messages to connect with the current era through images and text. In 2022, during isolation, she re-examined her life and created this video diary inspired by social media, recording the precious moments of 366 days a year.

In Waking Up From Yesterday, Patti Smith, a musician and writer, combines ancient and modern recording methods, using brief and restrained text and interrelated images to create a unique rhythm, allowing the past and the present to appear on paper: coffee and sunglasses at hand, trivial things on the desk, the beloved cat Cairo, the necklace from Mapplethorpe, Fred's guitar, Rimbaud's old house, Kurosawa's waterwheel, CBGB on the eve of closing... leading us into the world of this artist and taking a glimpse into his daily life and sources of inspiration.
