————————
"Accidental Creation" is a collection of columns written by Italian writer Elena Ferrante in the British newspaper The Guardian for a year in 2018. It is also the writer's first attempt at autobiographical writing since the publication of her debut work in 1992.
Through fifty-two concise and vivid essays, the author recalls many experiences, people and things that have special significance to him, and explains his views on topics such as fear and jealousy, growth and aging, body and writing, lies and privacy.
These honest and restrained words convey to us the image of a writer who is sensitive, shy, hates exclamation marks, and has fought against addiction to cigarettes and insomnia for many years. She affirms the exciting lies of her childhood and enjoys her motherhood. She misses her friends who died young and praises the expansion of plants and the productivity of women's bodies. She firmly believes that talent alone is far from enough for writing; she believes that dreaming of returning to the past is a denial of youth; she also asserts that national characteristics or national pride are some simplifications that need to be fought against.
Given that the topic of each column is assigned by the Guardian editor, she admits that this experience both frightened her and gave her a lot of inspiration. For Ferrante's readers, this book is a precious text that, in addition to her works, interviews and letters, reaches the face and self that the writer has always refused to show.
