Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
At the beginning of the Age of Exploration, Matteo Ricci tried to use mnemonics to open the door to China and change this unfamiliar culture. The Chinese followed him through the halls, admired the pictures, stepped into the depths of the memory palace, and walked towards the theological symbol represented by the symbol of the cross.
Eight fragments of Matteo Ricci's memory have miraculously survived to this day, including four Chinese characters and four paintings of biblical stories. It is through these accidental relics that Jonathan Spence ingeniously constructed a complete picture of the intersection of two great civilizations. We are also able to enter the memory palace created by Matteo Ricci and see him in the unknown world, sometimes firm and sometimes confused.
