The book "Lanting through the Ages: Wang Xizhi's Thoughts and Calligraphy" is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the circulation of "Lanting Preface", its main versions and the evaluation of it by art historians in history. In the second chapter "Wang Xizhi's Political Pursuit and Trauma", the author mainly interprets the political pursuit of the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi. The third and fourth chapters interpret how Wang Xizhi retained his personal characteristics in the atmosphere of the times and how he stood out among the literati. The fifth chapter interprets the causes and consequences of the formation of "Lanting Preface", a treasure in the world, the reasons for its success, the authenticity identification, etc., showing that the survival of "Lanting Preface" is not easy.

Chen Anfeng holds a PhD in Literature from the Faculty of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and currently works at the University of Hong Kong. His research covers Chinese poetics, Wei and Jin literature, literary history, modern and contemporary Chinese novels, and historiography such as The Strategies of the Warring States, A New Account of Tales of the World, and History of Ming Dynasty. His publications include Literary Archaeology: The Hidden Structure in Jin Yong’s Martial Arts Novels (Zhonghua Book Company, 2016), Enlightenment: The World of Thought in Jin Yong’s Martial Arts Novels (Zhonghua Book Company, 2015), Poetic History of Jiashen: 1644 Written by Wu Meicun (Zhonghua Book Company, 2014, Hebei People’s Publishing House, 2016), The Writing of Literary History and Its Dissatisfaction (Zhonghua Book Company, 2014), The Politics of Poetics and Its Interpretation (Zhonghua Book Company, 2013), Strategies of the Warring States (Zhonghua Book Company, 2013; Beijing CITIC Publishing House, 2014), A New Account of Tales of the World (Zhonghua Book Company, 2012; Beijing CITIC Publishing House, 2013), Questioning Mythology: A Study of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Novels (Tian Di Books, 2012), and Studies on Shen Deqian’s Poetics and The Doubtful Thought of Antiquity and the Construction of Vernacular Literary History: Hu Shi and Gu Jiegang, both published by Qilu Publishing House in mainland China in 2011 (second prize of “Excellent Book Award for Ancient Books in East China”). At the same time, he has also been committed to the creation of calligraphy and painting and the study of art history.
