Zhang Ailing is a modern Chinese writer. Her ancestral home is Fengrun, Hebei. She was born in Shanghai in September 1920 and died in Los Angeles, USA in September 1995. Zhang Ailing was deeply influenced by Chinese classical literature and received a good Western education, thus forming a literary vision that combines both Chinese and Western cultures. Her works mostly focus on the fate of ordinary people, have insight into the subtleties of human nature, and have a strong sense of history. She writes about the lives of all beings in a time of great change, with rich imagery and a unique desolate literary style. On the basis of inheriting the Chinese literary tradition, she has built her own rich and unique literary world.
