——————————
"Longevity of the Lusitanians" is a classic epic poem by Camões, the "spiritual father of Portugal". Through the description of the navigator Vasco da Gama's voyage to India, it praises the magnificent history of Portugal and the Portuguese people's fortitude, heroism and bravery.
——————————
He wrote the Cantos, the honors, the shipwrecks, the awakening of the people in the Cantos de Lusitaniens. He is a pure poetic genius, the greatest poet in our (Portuguese) literature, Camões, no matter how much it pains Pessoa, who claims to be a greater poet than Camões, to say this. Nothing suits me, and I cannot learn anything, except the simplest examples that Camões provided for me. His pure humanity, such as the proud humility, set an example for me.
——Jose Saramago
The Portuguese sailed on the Atlantic Ocean and discovered the southernmost tip of Africa. They saw a vast ocean that brought them to the East Indies. Camões wrote poems about their adventures on the sea and the discovery of Mozambique, Malin and Calicut. In his poems, one can feel the charm of the Odyssey and the magnificence of the Aeneid.
—Montesquieu
Time has worn away those swords that have been baptized by battle without regret. You returned to your beloved homeland in poverty. A great man of your generation, I hope to spend the rest of your life in its arms. In that mysterious desert, the "flower of Portugal" has long since withered and died; and the fierce Spaniards are far from giving in, coveting its open edge. I want to know, when you finally returned to this coast, did you have a premonition in your humble heart that the East and the West, the armor and the battle flags, all these forgotten flames (completely unconstrained by the changes of the world), would be passed on through your "Aeneid".
——Jorge Luis Borges
