Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
This is a book about "books", a review of books, showing historian Wang Di's observations on history over the past 40 years, or his reading history, from which we can get a glimpse of his thoughts on history and real society. To discover the "whisper of history" is to listen to the real voice of the people.
The book contains the author's book reviews published in Chinese and English academic journals and mass media. Among them, the English book reviews published in authoritative journals such as American Historical Review and Journal of Asian Studies are all translated into Chinese for the first time. This book is the first collection of the author's book reviews. It carefully reads William Rowe's "Saving the World" and "Red Rain", Carlo Ginsberg's "Cheese and Maggots", Robert Darnton's "The Massacre of Cats", Jonathan Spence's "The Death of Wang", Tocqueville's "The Old Regime and the Revolution", Karl Popper's "The Poverty of Historicism" and other historical masterpieces, thinking about human history, the development of civilization, and the relationship between China and the world. The first part of the book, "Reading is Self-shaping", and the last part, "It is Impossible to Predict the Future Course of History", were written specifically for this book and have not been published anywhere else.
The author drew nineteen character illustrations to convey the verve and power of thought of outstanding scholars such as Hayden White, John King Fairbank, Jonathan Spence, Philip Kuhn, and Eric Hobsbawm.
