Gustav Schwab (June 19, 1792 - November 4, 1850) was a famous German romantic poet and writer.
Schwab was born in Stuttgart, Germany. From 1809 to 1814, he studied theology and philosophy at the famous Tübinger Stift. After graduation, he worked as a pastor for a short period of time and later worked as a teacher. During his teaching career, he trained famous writers such as Schiller[1] and met great German writers such as Goethe, Uhland, and Wilhelm Hauff. His works mainly consisted of poems, ballads and compilations of German folk tales. The most influential work that earned him fame was Die schönsten Sagen des klassischen Altertums (The Most Beautiful Tales of Antiquity) published in 1840. This work is divided into three volumes and includes the story system of Greek mythology that has been widely circulated in later generations. It is mainly composed of three important parts: the legend of the Argonauts, the legend of Troy and the legend of Odysseus. It has become the most popular literary reading about ancient Greek mythology and legends in modern times. It has been translated into many languages. The Chinese version was first published in the 1950s by Chu Tunan based on the English translation of the book. The translation title was "Myths and Legends of Greece". The new translation title is "Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece", etc. In addition, Schwab edited and published works such as the five-volume "German Poetry" and the reading material "German Folk Tales Book" edited for teenagers and the elderly.
